The Leaving Certificate music course consists of a practical exam worth 50% and a theory exam worth 50%.
The practical exam for higher level can consist of 4 songs/pieces and music technology, 4 songs/pieces on one instrument/voice and 4 songs/pieces on another or 6 songs/pieces one instrument/voice.
For ordinary level the practical can consist of 4 songs/pieces on an instrument/voice or music teachnology.
The theory exam consists of 2 papers;
A listening paper with one querstion on each of 4 works studied, 1 question on Irish Music and 1 question on Aural Skills.
A composition paper with 6 questions of which you answer 2, one melody and one harmony (adding chords and bass notes to a given tune).
The new Junior Cycle Music will consist of 70% theory exam and 30% practical.
The two CBAs are a composition portfolio in second year and a programme note for the practical exam in third year.
