Congratulations to our 6th Year student Rebecca Pettit, who along with her dog Bella have been nominated in the category of making a positive difference in their school community.
Rebecca has a diagnosis of autism which presents her with many challenges in her everyday life. She is about to complete her secondary education which is a huge achievement for her, and a testament to her courage and perseverance. Rebecca has enriched the life of our school community in many ways. She acts as a role model for other children with additional learning needs both within school and in the broader community.
With her dog Bella, Rebecca is known, loved, and respected by our school and parish community. She raises awareness of persons with disabilities in our community. It brings home to teenagers that life can hold many challenges for some young people, and it makes them more aware of these individuals in our community and the valuable contribution they can make, if given the chance.
Rebecca has also promoted the work of Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland and was the first student in Ireland to go to school with her assistance dog Bella.
While Rebecca has learned a lot from her time in school, our school community has learned so much more from Rebecca!
